Liquid medications being poured onto a measuring spoon
Solutions, suspensions, and syrups are all liquid forms of medications that can be used orally or topically. They can provide an easier method to take medication for those who have a difficult time swallowing pills. It can also be a safer method than crushing tablets as some tablets may have a system to release the medication over a longer period of time. Crushing these tablets can compromise this process leading to potential harm. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist to see if a compounded solution, suspension, or syrup is the right choice for you.

Solutions contain a mixture of components that completely blend together and don’t separate out or settle to the bottom of the container. The ingredients mix so well due to the very small particle size of the ingredients being mixed together and are typically clear.
Suspensions include components that do not mix together completely and need to be shaken or mixed before every use as the ingredients will separate and settle to the bottom. The liquid usually appears more opaque and unable to see through.
Syrups are a liquid form of medication that is compounded with a thick, sweet, sticky liquid in which the medication is dissolved.
